Living in Barrow in the 20th Century

This first section comprises extracts from interviews with nearly 20 people, of differing backgrounds and ages, all currently living in Barrow. The extracts are arranged in decades to show how things have changed or stayed the same. Names have been included with each piece so that the stories of individual people and families can be followed if preferred. To make this easier the names by which people are now known have been used throughout, for example married names rather than maiden names.
We are grateful to everyone for sharing their memories and for their permission to publish them. Those who contributed were Duncan, Sue and Lucy Graham, Richard Greenwood, Denis and Dorothy Hudson, Jean and Geoff King, Ralph Lockwood, Lilian Middleton, Barbara and Don Mitchell, Karl Tipler, Pat and Patrick Wainwright and Sue and John Wilford. They were all interviewed by Arthur Gardner who says that everyone said virtually the same thing – Why me? I'm just ordinary. Well, you can judge for yourselves, history is not just about famous people and `ordinary' people do some extraordinary things!
