Discovering the history of Barrow Upon Soar......

Jim Squires (Squires Bus Service) Nook Lane Barrow

Operated from South St. garage and various yards.

After the First World War many ‘heroes’ returned home to a very different England: jobs were scarce while skills were high, this led many young men into setting up their own businesses, many in transport. Jim Squires was one of these.

In January 1922 he acquired a Daimler charabanc ‘NR 688’, The Red Rose and set about building up his transport business; by 1928 he had an established service between Sileby, Barrow, Quorn, and Loughborough. (A route that continues to this day as Kinchbus No 2. but now extended to Leicester and for many years operated by Howletts of Quorn).

The Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus (Midland Red) were a very large concern operating all over the Midlands and in 1935 they offered ‘terms’. Jim sold his service route licence and continued with the lorry business for some years.
