Discovering the history of Barrow Upon Soar......

018. Font & Font Cover - Ivy Brookes d.1990

Location:  Base of Tower

There is some damage on this memorial

  1. The octagonal bowl has a bevelled lip above and below a moulded frame with quatrefoil enclosing a moulded flower with four leaves entering the quatrefoil. Below the lip are eight more moulded flowers and leaves on a block sloping down to a smaller octagonal column with inset gothic arches culminating in a moulded rim with a flute and an octagonal base. This sits on a large  octagonal base with a step to the  west with an unusual shape; all sitting on a larger octagonal base. There is a brass plaque on right hand side of the font cover. The wooden octagonal font cover has four crosses joined together to make a central cross used to lift it. This cover replaced one which was given by the children of the church in 1923. Its weight was damaging the font.
  2. Font: Lime stone, cover wood.
  3. Font :early 20th century, cover late 20th century
  4. Cover 70 cm diameter. Plaque 4cm x 2.5 cm
  5. Cover designed and made by Mr Tony Revell
  6. Font: Tinkler of Derby. Samuel Peter Tinkler is in the Post Office Directory for Derby in 1876 as a monumental mason at Derwent Street East. In the 1881 census he is recorded at the same address as a sculptor employing 12 men and 3 boys. In 1891 he is a sculptor and monumentalist with his son Ernest his apprentice. In 1911 he was aged 66 and a sculptor (wood and stone). He was born in Farcett Huntingdonshire, the son of James an agricultural labourer and Martha nee Rimes.
  7.  Ivy Brookes was the mother of Lynne Brookes, author of Holy Trinity Church. A Brief History and Guide, Ivy was born in Barrow and, when possible, attended Holy Trinity Church. She was a founder member of the Women’s Choir of which she remained a member until the late 1940’s. Following retirement, she was key holder for the church and dealt with the bookings for the old Church Rooms. She did this until her death in 1990. She lived in the first cottage in Beveridge Street, next to the Roundhouse. Ivy’s memorial is the oak lid on the font at the rear of the church, which is appropriate, as she would always unlock the door at the back of the church to allow visitors to enter. The notice board in the church porch is a memorial to Ivy’s mother, Nellie Clarke.
